fahrenheit 451

After reading more of this book, I realized that Mildred, Montag's wife, isn't very happy. She always seems so miserable. Mildred doesn't really do anything with her life. She sits home in the parlor and stars at the walls. Before reading the book again, I didn't understand that the walls really weren't walls at all. The walls were full tv's. These tv's aren't regular tv's, they're tv's where you can talk to people. It's like talking on the computer, but with the tv's you can see the person you're talking to. The tv's in the book allow people to do many more things. Mildred is acting out a play from her home that someone wrote. She was sent the script from meeting someone on the tv's. I think of the tv's almost like video chatting. Mildred doesn't care about anything but herself. She isn't aware of her surroundings at all because she's so into the tv's. I don't see how Montag could like this woman if he's so interested in other things, like his job and even books. Montag seems like he's a all around nice guy who's interested in many things. Mildred seems like she's miserable and never wants to do anything but sit inside the parlor and watch the tv's. She even considers the tv's her "family".

Katharine: Nice job. Use this space to write about what you are thinking and it will help you learn. Some things to consider: How do you think Mildred would answer if she was asked whether she was happy or not? How is she different than Clarisse?

MATT HERE....I think that Mildred is a very cold and bitter woman as well. From the book i also think that she takes and over dosses on pills she has. Montag seems kinda worried about her because of these pills. I also agree with you when you say Mildred is never happy, she seems never satisfied as Montag's wife. i wonder how they are still together. Especially because they dont even remember how they first met.

Kath I completely agree. I think that Mildred is very miserable. It says a lot about her personality when she overdosed on pills. Normally happy people don't almost die from overdosing. You also brought up a great point when you wondered how they fell in love and got married. I think that Montag is very much of a hard worker who spends a lot of time on his job, and likes it. Mildred is more of a depressed person who doesn't seem like the type who would talk to others that she didn't know. Mildred is very much miserable, and thats a very good question when you asked how they fell in love. They are quite the opposites, which maybe proves the saying 'opposites attract'.

After reading Katharine’s blog I definitely agree with Montag and Mildred being unhappy. Also, I think that Mildred’s attempt at suicide has to do mostly with her unhappiness, but it is not explained fully in the novel. Answering her question, the TVs are mainly a way for the government to reach the community on how to act and what to do. She is so into T.V because it tells her what she wants to hear, and that’s what the government is trying to accomplish. Montag is now realizing that his life is “fake” to a certain point, and he is trying to show Mildred how he feels and how she should, but she refuses to listen to him and tells him he’s crazy.
